RUNNIN’ WITH THE DEVILS
MC vs. San Marcos October 9, 2009
The SUNDEVILS continued our season with the final home meet of the year. Passion was high and enthusiasm was contagious. I hope this continues in the upcoming weeks. The JV Girls race saw interesting things happen and Coach Andrew earned special accolades for his quick thinking on the course, as he had to divert the race to steer runners clear of a tractor or a ship, depending on who was telling the tale. The race proved to be a group effort with a large pack together through 2 miles. Indeed, the 1-6 gap was only 24 seconds at the end. Nicole “Nike” Garcia proved that she is back and ready to fly for the second half of the season. Lauren Hall is ripping up her own course with her second victory in as many attempts, while the team swept San Marcos with a perfect score of 15-50. Chelsea Winegarden is improving tremendously and placed in our team’s Top 10 with a sensational effort. Alexis Arroyo continues to get better every week and is a tribute to smart training.
The Varsity girls also dominated the Knights, scoring 18 points to San Marcos’ 45. This race also featured an improving pack as 24 seconds separated our places 3-9, which is outstanding! Continue to push one another in practice and meets and good things will happen at the end! Mackenzie Lance came back to Sundevil racing for her final home meet and we look forward to more efforts from her. Kiersten Iwai had a thrilling comeback as well and was a key member of the aforementioned pack.
The Varsity Boys took care of business, with a 19 to 42 victory. Brandon Latifi had a dramatic move on the final Rim trail to secure the 1-2-3. Marvin Medina returned to action after some time off and showed promise for an exciting end of the season. Branden Foster also made his debut for the year and wasted no time making an immediate impact, finishing in our Top 7 in his first attempt.
Finally, the JV lads had a timing error but competed well, ending up on the good side of a 17-46 score. Blake Eaton had a terrific race to score in the Top 5 and close the gap to under a minute. Eric “Lars” Sindel returned to action and showed that cone who’s boss, defeating all Knights and being part of a terrific pack up front. Kenny Pyle had his best race of the year and we look forward to more races of this caliber from him.
Nice job this week, Sundevils. You raced and behaved in a classy manner that represented our school well. We now have 2 weeks of Invitationals before resuming the league season at the end of October. No Gremlins!
