October 26 Great results from Mt SAC, the biggest, baddest XC meet inthe world, with 20, 000 athletes competing in 118 races spread over two weekends. Highlights: Kellen busting into the top echelon of California racing with a time of 14:42 over the three hill/three mile course. That time is faster than his time on the flat, fast Woodbridge course. Kellen's 6th place finish was the best by a San Diego boy. The rest of the guys ran well, placing 2nd to Loyola in the D2 team standings. The frosh boys, led by Jorge's 3rd place and Eric's 5th place, placed 5th in a very competitive team race. The soph boys were led by Adam O'Regan's 5th place and Jon Young in 14th, as they finished 4th to perennial powerhouse Thousand Oaks. The girls varsity ran the next -to-last rae of the entire meet, finishing 15th with Leigh leading the way. Last, but definitely not least: the frosh girls reached the awards stand with their big team and individual winner. Hannah finished a minute ahead of the 2nd place winner, with Alexandra in 3rd, Camille in 15th, Katherine 18th, and Sammy 37th.
October 12: Clovis - I need to add info here - check the email for now
October 7: Eastern League Competition is under way!! As you may have noticed, we compete against two teams at a time, while other schools compete in dual meets. We score the meets as if we were competing in two separate events. So, all three teams, Boys varsity, JV, and girls sit at 2-0 for the season.
Team Scores: (low score wins)
Varsity Boys: PH 17, Kearny 46; PH 16 San Diego 45
Girls: PH 15 Kearny 50; PH 17, San Diego 46 JV Boys: PH 15, Kearny 50; PH 19, San Diego 44
Highlights include Kellen and Ryan running within 3 seconds of the Henry school record of the course, 15:30, by Kyle Bruser. Hannah led 16 Henry girls in the first 17 finishers for her first career win! Many returning girls set personal bests while sending a message to the league that the girls are back. Thomas Redlinger's victory in the JV race was faster than the Kearny #2 and San Diego #4 runners in the varsity race. Next up: varsity to Clovis in Fresno and the rest of the team to Central Park in Huntington Beach on Saturday October 10.
September 19: Mount Carmel Invitational This was the biggest and fastest invitational of the year in San Diego. We competed here for the first time in about eight years. The meet course is similar to the CIF section championship and FootLocker national championship races to be held here later this year. The frosh girls started out the meet in fine fashion, negotiating the tough 2.75 mile course, including the famous CIF Hill in rapid fashion. Hannah's fifth place finish earned her equipment prizes as well as a medal, with Alexa Shade, Camille Jorgensen, Katherine Kurz, and Emily O'Sullivan also medalling. The best part was the frosh team's 2nd overall team place, defeating teams from many local and Orange County powers. Senior Susan Redlinger picked up the lone medal for Henry in a race loaded with runners from state and nationally ranked teams. The frosh boys also brought home hardware as Eric Cota, Paul Meredith, and Chris Tammadge hit paydirt. John Young and Shayan Rastegarpour closed well to pick up medals in the soph boys race. The boys made two trips up the hill in the 2.95 mile races.
September 5: Great start to the 2009 season at the Vaquero Stampede in Lakeside. Running in the early part of the day, we beat the heat and saw fine performances by new and returning runners. For many of the runners, the first race introduced ta crazy fast start, lots of bumping and pushing, and the chance to be cheered on by parents and team mates. The coaches are proud of the effort, support, and spirit you all showed today. The frosh/soph girls led off the action with Hannah Kay finishing second in a great finish with two UC High girls. Alexandra Shade medaled in 15th place, with Katherine Kurz missing hardware by only four seconds. The frosh/soph boys race saw Frosh Eric Cota match Hannah's secoond place finish, followed by sophs Jon Young, Adam O'Regan, and Shayan Rastegarpour in spots 3-4-5. Freshman Jorge Matt-Navarro and soph Ryan Stall also medaled to give the boys six finishers in the top 25. The fast varsity girsl race had twins Susan (15th) and Laura Redlinger (21st) bring home medals. Although we sat the returning members of last year's section champions, Luke Diedrich (17th) and David Watson (25th) led a large group of the older guys at the premature end of the junior/senior race. Results will be posted to this site by midweek. We look forward to seeing everyone race next Saturday at Kit Carson Park in Escondido.
August 20: Here we go, off to a new season with new challenges and opportunities. As families and teammates have heard, the Big Bear camp held August 12-15 was a huge success. The returning boys put more runners into the lead pack than ever before. New freshmen and sophomores gave promise of continuing the high quality of the boys' program. On the girls' side, most of the 25 new girls attended camp and convinced me that this will be more than a "rebuilding" year. Many thanks to Jim Maxwell for his talks on nutrition and mental and physical preparation. Coach Brett Wilso brought key members of his team and contributed with talks on being successful in all phases of life. Thanks to the boosters who made most of the arrangements, cooked or planned great meals, and let the coaches coach.

Eastern League Finals: Boys dominate the varsity and JV races; girls run with mixed results to finish 4th behind improved Point Loma, Serra, and Mira Mesa. In the girls race, Leigh Martin (8th) and Amanda Sorourbakhsh (10th) both qualified for all-league recognition. Soph Karina Garnier of Serra ran away with the overall victory, with a deep Mira Mesa squad winning the league championship in an undefeated season. You can check individual results for all schools. The boys JV put ten runners in the top 15 finishers, sending a message that there are replacements in the wings for our graduating seniors. Duane Palmer finished strong to win in 17 minutes, 40 seconds, followed by Casey Dugan and Connor Wynveen. Special recognition is due to the three fastest freshmen in the league, Adam (5th), Shayan (7th), and Mike (11th). The varsity boys continued their march to championship week with a near-sweep of the top places. With Adrian, Kellen, and Ryan placing 1-2-3 and Nick, Eddie, and Nick Tammadge at 5-6-7, the Patriot score of 17 points was close to a perfect 15.

Adrian and Kellen ran two of the best Henry times in recent years, 15:38 and 15:41, to lead defending EasternLeague champion Paul Achee across the line. EriK Figge ran 4th in 16:18, closely followed by Nick Haines in 16:20. After a lone San Diego runner, Nick Tammadge, Eddie Ramos, and Casey Dugan made it 7 out of the top 9 for Henry.
For the girls, Holly led the way with a seson best 21:10, followed by Leigh in 21:22. Amanda, Emily Parker (returning from injury), and Susan Redlinger completed a Henry sweep of the top five spots. I know that there were some breakthrough time improvements for the girls, but our copy of the finish sheet was illegible, and we are waiting for confirmation of what we have recorded.
The JV Boys overcame a detour on the desert loop to record a 16- 46 victory over San Diego. After losing to Mira Mesa, the Patriot JV put eight in the top ten to win handily.
Report from Mt SAC, the toughest course in Southern California. Seven has been our number this year in major invitationals. The Patriot boys took on the best in the state, including two nationally ranked teams on Saturday. Led by Kellen Blumberg (plaid boxers and all) the boys finished 7th in the sweepstakes race that was featured as more loaded than the state championship race. Kellen's time of 15:26 averages to just under a 5:09 pace for the course that is at least 50% uphill. Adrian finished 34th with Ryan seconds behind in 36th. Erik Figge and Nick Haines ran 16: 20 and 16:29 to place 71 and 78 respectively. Nick Tammadge ran a fine 17:04 and Casey Dugan moved up to run with the big guys and ran 17:55. Ahead of Henry were four DI schools and the top two DII schools in the state. We had the pleasure of visiting with former El Camino and AJ Acosta coach Tom Kloos, who is now the men's coach at the University of San Francisco. (Sweet's alma mater)
We're back from the Clovis Invitational in Freso. A big thank - you to the parents who drove and supported the runners with cheers , snacks, and warm clothes. Special thanks to the Mr. & Mrs. Haines who traveled through Friday evening traffic in Los Angeles, bringing Nick's grandmother and Casey to Fresno. The Clovis course at Woodward Park is the site of the State Championship Meet. The course is mostly grass and dirt trails, with a few stretches of pavement. It gave us a chance to race over the 5K course against some of the the top-rated teams in the state.
The girls led off a chilly morning (below 50 degrees at 8:05) with competition in the Large Schools Varsity race. Holly led the way with a season best 21:10 for the 5K race. Susan Redlinger, Amanda Sorourabakhsh, and Leigh Martin finished together about 40 seconds back, with Jaclyn Gutierrez, Allison Devenport, and Summer Deibert all finishing below 23 minutes. The Large Schools Varsity Boys race gave some of our future stars an opportunity to race against top competition. Juniors Casey Dugan and Eddie Ramos finished in 17:19 and 17:24, followed by soph Ted Breslow at 17:33, senior Duane Palmer in 18:09, and senior Andrew Gordon in 19:50.
Once again, the boys proved that they belong at the highest level of competition, placing 7th of 20 teams in the Sweepstakes Race. Henry's score of 192 points was only 21 points behind the 4th place result, with the top 5 runners averaging 16:01 for a 5K. The six teams ahead of them are all ranked in the top seven of the state for their respective divisions. Henry was led by soph Ryan Urie in 18th place (2nd 10th grader) at 15:40, followed by junior Kellen Blumberg in 20th at 15:42. Adrian had a tough race and finished 31st, just 13 seconds back at 15:55. Erik Figge and Nick Haines rounded out the top 5 by placing 61st and 89th respectively. There were only 17 seconds separating Erik and Nick, with 28 runners, so you can see how competitive the race was. Nick Tammadge and Chris Eggett completed the team result by running 16:56 and 17:08. Their times equate to a Morley field time of about 16:30!
Henry runners will begin a series of four Thursday races in a row at Morley Field on October 23. The first three will be 3-team League contests, with separate scoring for Patrick Henry against each team. The fourth Thursday, November 13, will be the Eastern League Championships, with all 7 teams competing in Boys Varsity, Girls, and Boys JV races. On Saturday October 24, the boys varsity only will travel to legendary Mt. SAC to run the toughest course in Southern California.
Save these dates: Saturday November 22 - CIF Championship, Saturday, November 29, State Championship.
