BURT WILLIAMS CLASSIC
SATURDAY, MARCH 26, 2011
CENTRAL VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL
4066 LA MESA AVENUE
SHASTA LAKE CITY, CALIFORNIA
10:00 A.M. START TIME
Coaches:
In 1971 Burt Williams started an invitational exclusively for small school competition. It was known as the Central Valley Invitational. Over the years this invitational has grown to include all schools in and around Northern California, and has now become the John Frank Invitational.
In tradition with having a competitive meet exclusively for small schools, the Burt Williams Classic was formed to bring together the talents of athletes from smaller schools in a championship format. It is also to honor a man who has been a large part of Track and Field in the north state for over 40 years.
You are invited to the 7th annual BW Classic on Saturday, March 26, 2011. The meet will be held at Central Valley High School in Shasta Lake CA, on their all weather facility, including pole vaulting. I hope your team can be part of this meet to help make it successfully competitive.
MEET INFORMATION
START TIMES AND COACHES MEETING: Field events will begin at 10:00 a.m., running will begin at 11:00 a.m. There will be a coaches meeting at 9:30 a.m. at the announcers booth to go over any last minute information.
ENTRIES: The intention of the meet is to have a competitive venue while allowing athletes to participate as much as possible. With this in mind, please try to limit your entries to no more than three athletes per event per division. You may add more, but remember loading up events will ultimately dilute the quality of the meet. The top 6 athletes will receive awards but only your top 3 finishers will be included for your overall team score. Athletes may compete in four events. You must enter your athletes online at www.athletic.net. If you are in a different region, this meet can be found in the “CA: Northern” region of the website.
Entries must be entered online at athletic.net by 4:00 p.m. by March 24th.
Submit accurate 2011 times for seeding and note if time is FAT or hand timed. If you don’t have seed times, athletes will be placed in available lanes by lottery.
ADDS TO THE MEET: We will try to fill any open lanes after all scratches and substitutions have been made. We will not add any races or heats, and the clerk’s decision will be final. Please pick up and complete a scratch sheet at the announcers booth prior to the coaches meeting. Scratch sheets will be collected at the coaches meeting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
ENTRY FEES: $5.00 per athlete, $5.00 per relay team. $200.00 max per school. Make checks payable to Burt Williams Classic. Checks can be submitted on the day of the meet. Invoices will be provided if needed.
VOLUNTEERS: As it is always difficult to have enough volunteers to run a meet, I will give a $20.00 entry discount if you can provide two adults to assist or run a field event. Please let me know ASAP by phone or e-mail (both are below).
AWARDS: Medals will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Ribbons will be awarded for 4th, 5th and 6th place. Team awards will be given to the top teams in each division.
SPIKES: All running surfaces are all weather. ¼ inch spikes are required.
CLERK OF THE COURSE: Coaches please note the location of the clerk when you arrive and inform your athletes of the location before the meet begins. All competitors for running events must report to the clerk of the course 15 minutes before the start of their event or by 2nd call. Athletes will be given their heat and lane assignments as well as spikes checked for proper length. Late entries will be scratched.
STARTING HEIGHTS FOR HIGH JUMP: Starting heights for each division will be the lowest submitted competitor height.
POLE VAULT: Vaulting will be available for current competing athletes. Because many of the small schools in Northern California do not have vaulting, this event will not be scored as a team event. Athletes will compete for individual awards. Starting heights for each division will be the lowest submitted competitor height. Please note: As per 2011 NFHS rules, all vaulters must weigh less than the weight rating on their pole. Vaulting coaches will be required to verify athlete and pole weight rating prior to competition.
UNIFORM RULE: Uniform rules, as printed in the 2011 NFHS Rules Book, will be enforced. Please inform your athletes before they report to their events. Any special uniform requests must be cleared in advance with the Meet Director. Remember, no jewelry is allowed. This includes “LIVESTRONG” type wristbands. Also, currently in California, hair ribbons are not allowed (hair ties and scrunchies are o.k.).
TEAM HEADQUARTERS: Make team headquarters in the grandstands or the areas around the track. Only athletes currently competing are allowed in the track area.
FOOD AND DRINKS: Central Valley High School Boosters Club will provide concessions.
We look forward to having you compete this year. If you have any questions, please call me (Todd) at (530) 384-1958 or (530) 200-3784 or e-mail me at toddhamer@sbcglobal.net.
