ST. MARY’S TRACK & FIELD
Dear Athlete,
Welcome to the 2013 edition of the Crusader track team. The basic question that one must ask of themselves at this point in the season is: How hard do I want to work? After the last four year’s team showings at the league and state level, the coaches hope this year’s team will strive just that much harder to continue our level of excellence that has characterized the St. Mary's track and field program.
As each individual works hard to reach his or her goals, we will experience team success. First and foremost, we are looking to have a team of athletes willing to work hard toward individual and team goals. With that, we want athletes who are willing to make the sacrifices necessary to achieve these goals. For example: 1) Will you be an athlete who is aggressive, enthusiastic, confident, disciplined, and competes fearlessly? 2) Will you be intelligent enough to listen and develop the ability to work and learn? 3) Will you have faith in the people you are working with? 4) Will you always strive to not let your teammates down and always put your team ahead of yourself? 5) Will you maintain your integrity and your sense of humor?
Competing in track and field is a rigorous undertaking. Although its rewards are numerous, it is not without its potential hazards. You are to be forewarned that injuries are a possible part of training and competing. A guarantee against their occurrence is impossible, but following the coaches’ instructions, undergoing a proper warm-up and cool down at all workouts and meets, and using common sense can minimize their likelihood.
Some important guidelines for this year’s team:
· Attendance-- Although every St. Mary’s student is usually a very involved participant in the community, we expect a dedicated effort from every athlete to attend each practice. Practices will usually run from 3:45 to 5:45. If you are unable to attend practice for a legitimate reason, you must inform one of the coaches or captains directly. If you are injured, the coaches will give you alternative workouts to complete. Unexcused absences will result in loss of varsity letter points, being left home from meets, and/or being released from the team.
· Citizenship-- As a representative of St. Mary’s track team you are expected to uphold the policies of the school and behave in a way that brings honor to the team and school. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action from the team in addition to, or in lieu of, any action the school may take.
· Uniforms-- Each athlete will be issued a uniform. This is to be worn to each meet. Failure to do so will result in not being able to compete in that meet. These must be returned promptly at the conclusion of the season.
· Lettering-- In determining this year’s varsity lettering policy, the coaches decided to reward the things that are valued: 1) attendance, 2) commitment, 3) performance, 4) improvement, 5) service, 6) reflection. Therefore, we have ascribed a point value to various areas of evaluation:
* pre-season = up to 15 points for participation in a winter sport or verifiable, consistent pre-season work
* loyalty to program = 10 points for every year on the St. Mary's HS track team
* daily attendance = 4 points each day (minus 4 points for an unexcused absence).
* meet points = 1 point for each point scored at our meets
* PR’s = 5 points for each breaking of a seasonal best in a given event
* District finalist = 5 points (per event) given for placing in top 6 at SCL meet
* State meet qualifier = 10 points (per event) given for qualifying for state meet
* State finalist = 15 points (per event) given for placing in top 8 at state meet final
* School record board = 20 points (per event) given for earning placement of name on school record board
* Track service = points given for providing service for upkeep of track facility or at M.S. meets
* Parental support = points for parental volunteers to officiate at meets
* Captains = 10 points for fulfillment of duties pertaining to role of captain
* Journal = 10 points for upkeep and submission of season’s training journal
A varsity letter will be awarded to those athletes who accumulate 300 points over the course of the season.
