On April 23, 2011, Curtis High School will host the 24th Annual Viking Relays. The meet originated in 1962 with the Tigers from Stadium the Champions. It was called The Daffodil Festival Relays and preceded girl’s completive sports in Washington so it was a boys only meet. It ran under the sponsorship of the Tacoma Athletic Commission, Pierce County Park Department, Metropolitan Park District, and the Tacoma School District. The meet died out after the 1980 season, but started up again in 1997 through 1999.
My goal is to bring back a high energy high school track & field relay meet to this area. This format breaks the normal mold of most track meets. A couple stars in each event will not dominate the meet; you will need TEAM depth to pull out a victory. In a relay format you need a three or four person TEAM to bring home a championship. Team depth is a must and the TEAM that pulls together will eventually run, put, vault & jump away with the title.
We would like to build a high school meet that resembles the large collegiate relay meets that are so successful, Texas Relays, Penn Relays, and Drake Relays. The plan was to start with 8 to 12 teams the first year, 400 to 1000 athletes. As time progresses, we could move up to 24+ teams and have 1000 to 4000 athletes participating. This 2011 season we are shooting for 16 teams to fill the meet.
