- You are expected to be at practice on all regular school days, 3:20 to 5:45.
- If you are healthy enough to attend school, you are healthy enough to attend practice.
- If you must miss a practice due to a doctor's appointment,etc., then you must notify your head event coach in advance with a note from home.
- Missing practice is not acceptable. Two excused absences or one un-excused absence may result in an athlete not being allowed to compete in that week’s meet. The athlete is expected to attend in street clothes to cheer on teammates. This rule will be in affect unless overruled by the coaching staff.
- Unless announced otherwise, always bring your sweats, top and bottom, to practice every day. Have a stocking cap and gloves handy in case it's really cold.
- Athletes are not to leave practice unless dismissed by the event coach.
- Athletes must never quit during practice or meets, unless there is an injury or the event coaches dismisses him/her.
II. At the meet
1. You may compete in one to four events.
2. You may be asked to compete in one or two events for the
TEAM. Your TEAM and TEAMMATES come first. However, you
will not be forced into an event -- we will make
suggestions for the good of the TEAM, and you will make
the final decision.
3. You are expected to stay out on the track until the last
event (whatever it may be) is over. Sometimes the
weather is bad so have your gloves, stocking hat, coat,
and umbrella handy. After the team score is announced,
you are free to leave.
4. We are really glad that your boyfriend or girlfriend can
come and watch you compete. However, if you spend more
time with him/her than with your teammates, then you are
not putting the team first.
5. Every athlete must help with setting up for the meet and
help put away equipment after the meet. The event
coach and event leader will organize assignments.
6. We make it a habit in the Viking program to treat
opponents and officials with courtesy and respect.
Breaking this rule will not be permitted.
7. All team members who are not warming up or competing
are automatically on the "Hurdle Crew" at league meets
(not invitationals), whether we are home or away.
III. Transportation to and from away meets
1. You must ride on the team bus unless you have previous
permission from the athletic office.
2. If you wish to go home with your parent(s) after a meet
has concluded, the parent must sign out with the coach
3. Going home with another parent requires previous permission from the office. Going home
with another high school student is never permitted.
D. Behavior on the bus will be excellent. If the bus is left with garbage on the floor, Coach Berger
will count the 4-count sit-ups the next day (Note: not fun).
IV. In the locker room
A. There will be no "horsing around". The only things that happen from such behavior are injuries.
B. Make sure you do not leave valuables in the locker room during practices or meets. Take them with
you or have a coach lock them in the office.
ATHLETES ARE EXPECTED TO BRING HONOR TO THEIR SCHOOL AND THEIR TEAM IN THEIR ATTITUDES AND ACTIONS AT ALL TIMES. OUR NUMBER
ONE GOAL IS TO SHOW CLASS IN ALL WE DO!
SAFETY RULES FOR VIKING ATHLETES
TRACK AND FIELD IS A DANGEROUS SPORT, ESPECIALLY IF PROPER SAFETY PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT FOLLOWED. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING SAFETY RULES AND PROCEDURES IN ORDER TO AVOID INJURIES. ALSO, REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE TAKING A RISK BY BEING A PART OF THE PROGRAM, AND THAT YOU CAN GET HURT EVEN IF ALL PROCEDURES ARE FOLLOWED.
1. Be sure you have your physical exam and red clearance card
before participating in track.
2. Warm up completely before starting physical activities.
3. Be sure you are taught the skill and feel competent before trying any
complex or potentially dangerous activity (pole vaulting, throwing,
jumping, hurdling, etc.)
4. Watch for the location of other competitors, especially in
throwing areas, runways, etc.
5. Never participate in any event without direct supervision of
a coach. This includes all practices, either indoors or out.
6. Check your implement before using it, including vaulting poles,
condition of landing mats, javelins, etc.
7. Follow all other safety procedures as stated by your event
coach and the school's athletic handbook.
Lane assignments (1 for distance runners, 2-5 sprinters, 6-8 hurdlers)
When you are on the track and hear the word "Track" yelled, move aside quickly
Do not go over hurdles from the opposite direction
Do not cross event approach areas without checking both directions
Do not go across the grass infield area where the javelin is being
Look both ways when crossing a lane
Wear proper shoes
Wear sweats and be sure to warm up properly
NEVER PRACTICE WITHOUT A COACH IN DIRECT SUPERVISION!
SHOT, DISCUS AND JAVELIN
Throw in designated areas only
Throwers must observe and caution potential victims
Javelins must never be left diagonal to the ground, ANYWHERE
Never throw toward a person in range
Anticipate implements sliding along grass, especially when wet
Look out behind you when drawing javelin back
Do not throw when footing is poor
Use caution in stopping rolling implements
Plan escape route when marking or measuring throws
Anticipate wind currents in discus and javelin
All throw and then all retrieve
Don't allow non-throwers to use equipment
No more than 6 to 8 javelin throwers throwing at one time
Jump only in designated area
Check pits for proper preparation before use
Do not allow non-jumpers to make attempts
Stand clear of standards and crossbars in vertical jumps
Keep grounds-keeping equipment (i.e., rakes, bar raisers, etc.)
well clear of jumping areas
Never run alone
Check all directions before crossing traffic
Always run facing traffic
Run single file
Run on shoulder of road
Know your route and INFORM YOUR COACH. Be sure to check in
when you get back.
