Harvest Classic 2017  (coaches)

Hello Coaches. Here is everything (I think) you might want to know about the Harvest Classic, which is now less than 2 weeks away.

INTRODUCTION
The 38th annual Harvest Classic is a charity road race (5K and 10K) hosted by the Longview Early Edition Rotary Club. This is the third year the HC had a high school and middle school team competition. This team event, professionally chip-timed by Uberthon's LLC, occurs simultaneously with the community 5K race. So the HS boys and girls and the MS runners are all running the same course at the same time as the other teams and the open runners. If you wish, your athletes may also participate in the 10K race, but there will be no team competition for that event.

As it is a community road race (NO SPIKES!!), the Harvest Classic is sanctioned by USA Track & Field and does not strictly conform to the NFHS/WIAA rules. There won't be starting lanes; the MS runners must run the 5K; club teams are welcome; and uniform requirements are relaxed (but please make sure your teams ' shirts match for recognition). Coaches and parents can run in the open event (must register separately) and won't be disqualified for pacing their teams. There are typically 300-500 runners in the 5K and 100-200 in the 10K.

The team competition will be scored like a regular cross country race. You can enter as many runners as you would like, but we will only score the top 5 and count the top 7 (no JV scores). The top boys and girls teams will each win a plaque. Additionally, your runners are eligible to win age group ribbons in the open event. Last year a high school girl also won a plaque for being the 5K overall female winner. **PLEASE ENTER YOUR ATHLETE'S AGES/BIRTH DATES INTO ATHLETIC.NET**

Remind you athletes that this is chip timed, not gun timed; i.e., their time starts when they cross the starting line. Tp preven congestion, I ask that runners line up based on their projected race pace/finish time. There will be signs to line up for those under 19:30 (under 6:20/mile); under 21:00 (under 6:45/mi); under 21:30 (6:55/mi) and under 23:00 (under 7:24/mi). The atart will be a mass start (no waves), but lining up by projected pace should increase the safety and speed of the start.

OTHER INORMATION
1. PACKETS. Team Packet pick-up will be from 7:00 A.M. to 8:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 7th at the LifeWorks warehouse, 906 New York Street, Longview. Open runners can also pickup packets on Friday, October 6th from 9:30 A.M. to Noon at the CAP HELP Warehouse, 1526 Commerce Avenue, Longview.

2. For coaches and family members who want to run (5K or 10K), go to the race website, http://www.rotaryharvestclassic.org to register on line by October 4th. Same day registration is from 7:00 A.M. to 8:00 A.M. at Life Works - $25.00. The regular entry fee is $20.00 for preregistration and $25.00 for same day registration. Group rates are available; contact me for information.

3. T-SHIRTS. Long sleeve "tech tees" are available on a first-come, first serve basis for $15 each. If you didn't preregister, there is no guarantee we will have any shirts left in your size. We have lots of shirts from prior Harvest Classic races available at a very reasonable rate.

4, Start and Finish. Corner of 9th and New York near LifeWorks. 10K begins at 8:30, 5K begins at 8:45. Participants should line up about 10 minutes before their race. Course will close at 10:30 A.M.

5. Results are available -- instantly -- at http://results.uberthons.com/

6. Prizes. In addition to plaques for each overall male and female winner and for the first place high school and middle school teams, there are ribbons for 1st through 3rd places for several age divisions. AND, everyone has a chance to win door prizes at our drawing (random bib number draw) -- including some really cool grand prizes.

7.  Pee Wee Fun run. A free 1/4 mile fun run for kids age 9 and under will occur at about 9:45 A.M. sponsored by the Child & Adolescent Clinic. All entrants will receive a ribbon and a shirt.

8. Numbers. This event is "chip timed" by Uberthons. Wear your number bib (that has a computer chip on the back) in the front and uncovered so the computer can accurately read it. Make sure you have the right type of number for the right race: 5K numbers are red; 10K are blue. If you wish to change races, you must do so before 8:00 A.M. at the registration booth in LifeWorks.

9. Water and refreshments. Water will be provided to runners on the course by volunteers from Heritage Bank. Fruit and water will be served to runners at the finish. The Lower Columbia School Gardens will provide fresh squeezed apple cider from an apple press donated by the Longview Early Edition Rotary Club.

10. Charity. This event supports local humanitarian needs. Most of the profits go to the HELP Warehouse that provides the food to food banks in Cowlitz and Wahkiakum Counties. Other lesser beneficiaries include the following non-profit organizations: LifeWorks, Faithful Servants and the Longview Early Edition Rotary Foundation.

11. Virtual Food drive. You can donate a "Virtual Can" for $2.00 to buy one pound of food for the HELP Warehouse. You can do this on-line through the registration site or contribute on race day at LifeWorks.

14. Parking. Cowlitz County Fairgrounds parking off of 7th Avenue (a large grass field opposite the fairgrounds). There is no charge. There will be volunteers directing parking. Note: New York Street is closed. The Saturday market will also occur in the same area close to 7th Avenue. Cars and vans can park in any available parking in the lot. (Per the County's direction), buses must park behind a small grey storage building on the southeast corner of the lot (very close to the start line). Enter the lot from 7th Avenue at the entrance closest to New York Street, then make an immediate left after the storage building.

15. Emergency Medical care. There will be first aid kits and a physician at LifeWorks. 10K runners will pass by PeaceHeath St Johns Hospital twice. Further, there are many PeaceHealth employees running in the HC. For your kids, my wife, AnneMette Smeenk, is a pediatrician and will be working at the awards table.

16. The Course. Both the 5K and 10K are fast and flat; these are PR courses. The 5K is a loop with a short out-and-back around downtown Longview. The 10K also runs downtown but also adds about three miles along beautiful Lak Sacajawea. The 5K is all on paved road. The 10K is also on paved roads, but will include about 100 meters of gravel trail at the north end of the lake. Course Records: 5K - Aaron Brumbaugh 15:38//Andi Camp 19:21; 10K - Alberto Salazar 29:21//Jennifer Brevard 34:30.

http://www.logyourrun.com/index.php?option=com_routes&task=loadroute&Itemid=46&code=cSGyQBzM5AKJ1s 10K

17. Traffic control. There are road monitors, some certified flaggers and police officers controlling traffic during the race. But, with the exception of New York Street, the streets are open to traffic. Please watch out for drivers who aren't watching out for you.

18. Entry Fees. The HS entry fee will be $75/team with unlimited runners. If you have both a boys and girls team, that would be $150. Contact me if your team will be running incomplete in order to get a prorated entry fee. MS teams will be just $25. Please keep in mind this is a charity event. You are getting the lowest possible entry fee/runner. Send checks to Harvest Classic, P.O. Box 2064, Longview, WA 98632. An invoice will be provided upon request. [Donations are tax deductible, as the Longview Early Edition Rotary Club and the HELP Warehouse are 501(C)(3) charities.]

Harvest Classic 2017  (coaches)

1. Follow in the foot steps of running legend, Alberto Salazar, the Harvest Classic course record holder.

2. The 38th annual Harvest Classic is a charity road race (5K and 10K) hosted by the Longview Early Edition Rotary Club. This is the third year the HC has a high school and middle school team competition. The schools and the club teams that participated in the past had a great time and enjoyed the fresh squeezed apple cider. This team event, professionally chip-timed by Uberthon's LLC, occurs simultaneously with the community 5K race.  So the HS boys and girls and the MS runners are all running the same course at the same time as the other teams and the open runners.  Last year, a few HS runners ran the 10K, with Aberdeen's Kyle Hurd winning the open event. You may enter runners in either of the events, but only the 5K will be scored as a team event.

3. As it is a community road race, the Harvest Classic is sanctioned by USA Track & Field and does not strictly conform to the NFHS/WIAA XC rules. There won't be starting lanes; the MS runners must run the 5K course; club teams are welcome; and uniform requirements are relaxed (but please make sure your teams ' shirts match for recognition). Coaches and parents can run in the open event (must register separately) and won't be disqualified for pacing their teams. All that said, the team competition will be scored like a regular cross country race. You can enter as many runners as you would like, but we will only score the top 5 and count the top 7 (no JV scores).  The top boys and girls teams will each win a plaque.  Additionally, your runners are eligible to win age group ribbons in the open event. Please keep in mind this is a charity event. You are getting the lowest possible entry fee/runner (same day registration for the open event is $25 per person).  Most of our profits go the to HELP Warehouse that provides the food to food banks in Cowlitz and Wahkikaum Countries.  Lesser amounts go to other local charities.  Send checks to Harvest Classic, P.O. Box 2064, Longview, WA 98632. An invoice will be provided upon request.   [Donations are tax deductible, as the Longview Early Edition Rotary Club and the HELP Warehouse are  501(C)(3) charities.]

5. A limited number of event shirts will be on sale at the race for $15 each.
